Maria Alvarez-Scott was appointed Group General Counsel and Company Secretary Designate on 2 February 2026.

Skills and experience

Maria brings more than 15 years of senior legal leadership experience across the Group. Since joining Legal & General in 2009, she has held a series of pivotal roles, most recently serving as Deputy Group General Counsel and General Counsel for the Group’s insurance businesses, where she has advised on major litigation, transactions, regulatory matters and strategic initiatives shaping the organisation’s growth.

Widely recognised as a trusted adviser to boards and executive teams, Maria combines deep legal expertise with a pragmatic, business focused approach. She is a solicitor admitted in England and Wales.
